What is a Data Historian?

A Data Historian is a piece of software which works with an HMI (or directly with intelligent field devices) to collect, organize, and store data for future use.

Many databases are designed to store large amounts of data (like MySQL and Access). Some are designed to store very large amounts of data (like Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle), but few are designed to handle real-time data. IndustrialSQL is a Wonderware product that adds extensions to the SQL language and a data compression utility which allow it to store very large amounts of data very quickly. In short, IndustrialSQL is:

• Real-time relational database
• Extension to Microsoft SQL Server

which provides:

• Order of magnitude increase in acquisition speed
• Reduction in storage volume

ActiveFactory, a companion piece of software to IndustrialSQL, is designed to allow non-programmers easy access to the historical data so they can quickly set up trends and print reports.
